My Compelling Story

Sunil Padwal is a professional painter based out of the finance capital of India, Mumbai. He seeks inspiration from all aspects of everyday life, including the very mundane - work in progress, pollution everywhere, fast changing skyline, noisy traffic, homeless people and animals stuck in today’s concrete jungle. The social schism makes him restless and prompts him to probe further and pose pointed questions in a continuous quest of convincing and lasting solutions to our lingering problems. His artistic terrain has often revolved around the solitary urban male form. His protagonist, as Padwal says, is an urban man hemmed in by the uncaring world in which he lives. In his drawings, Padwal utilizes pen, pencil, watercolor, and ink in combination with select-collaged elements to expose and give voice to his hidden thoughts. These materials are specifically chosen for their yielding character. Some of the works have been stained and burned. It is as if he uses the paper, not only for it is surface quality but rather as an object. Numerous drawings are created with an isograph pen, an architectural drafting tool. His works have a universal appeal. Although imbued with a restless energy, his works are contrarily, completely still and display a sense of contentment and peace. His craftsmanship is exemplary and the symbolism exciting.
